Morphological description of microplastic particles for environmental fate studies

چکیده
The morphological description of microplastic particles is mostly based on subjective descriptors. However, data intercomparison requires unambiguous classifications. This work presents a the lengths smallest enclosing orthogonal parallelepiped. Three dimensionless parameters, namely equancy, platiness and elongation describe any particle shape with reference basic 3D (sphere), 2D (plate) 1D (rod) shapes. size directly linked to environmental fate microplastics Stoke's diameter. derivation diameter descriptors explained proxies that can be used if only projected images are available discussed. shows behaviour irregular not adequately predicted using as descriptor sphere same volume particle. There need obtain equations specifically developed for plastic particles, especially fibres, atmospheric compartment.

Do microplastic particles affect Daphnia magna at the morphological, life history and molecular level?
Microplastic particles are ubiquitous not only in marine but also in freshwater ecosystems. However, the impacts of microplastics, consisting of a large variety of synthetic polymers, on freshwater organisms remains poorly understood. We examined the effects of two polymer mixtures on the morphology, life history and on the molecular level of the waterflea Daphnia magna (three different clones)...

The widespread occurrence and accumulation of plastic waste in the environment have become a growing global concern over the past decade. Although some marine organisms have been shown to ingest plastic, few studies have investigated the ecological effects of plastic waste on animals. Here we show that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of microplastic polystyrene particles (90...

To understand the impact ofmicroplastic (MP) pollution to aquatic ecosystems, it is important to identify the mechanisms of interaction with organisms. Exposure experiments, like the study of Sussarellu et al. (1) recently published in PNAS, may provide such insights. However, the results of dose–response experiments must always be interpreted in light of environmental concentrations, and the e...

Alkylphenolic compounds derived from microbial degradation of non-ionic surfactants became a major focus of environmental research in the early 1980s. More toxic than the parent compounds and weakly oestrogenic, certain metabolites of nonylphenol polyethoxylate (NPnEO) surfactants, especially nonylphenol (NP), raised sustained concern over the risk they pose to the environment and triggered leg...

A comprehensive environmental fate and effects testing program, sponsored by the Chemical Manufacturers Association (CMA) Phthalate Esters Program Panel, has been completed. Based on the results, a preliminary safety assessment has shown that all of the 14 commercially important phthalates tested have sufficiently high safety factors to demonstrate low potential for adverse environmental effect...
